The Department of Justice is seeking applicants for an Assistant Attorney General in the Business Transactions Section. Attorneys in the Business Transactions Section engage in complex commercial transactions, reviewing and negotiating high-dollar agreements in a variety of areas, including high-tech contracts, investment agreements, infrastructure contracts and licensing agreements.

Some examples of projects that attorneys in Business Transactions Section advise on are:

  • Cutting-edge technology transactions such as e-permitting, e-Court and eprocurement; Lottery networks and gaming systems; online testing systems and telecommunications agreements.

  • General Counsel advice on cyber security, electronic and digital signatures, government use of the internet and social media.

  • Private equity investment and investment management agreements for the State Treasurer.

  • Development and disposition agreements for large tracts of state-owned real property.

  • Entertainment agreements for Oregon State Fair, and sponsorship agreements for Oregon State Fair and Oregon State Lottery.

  • Innovative partnership transactions for the Oregon Department of Transportation, such as the Solar Highway Project.

  • Contracts related to the design and construction of bridges, highways and buildings for Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon University System and others.

We seek an experienced intellectual property/information technology transactions attorney, but candidates with other transactional experience will be considered and are invited to apply. Starting salary will be based upon prior experience and other factors.

As our Assistant General Counsel - IP Litigation, you'll manage patent, trademark and copyright claims, including managing litigation defense. You'll actively manage outside counsel, including setting budgets, directing strategy, facilitating discovery, and working with internal witnesses. You'll enforce NIKE's intellectual property against infringers globally, analyzing the merits of potential claims and relevant business considerations and determine whether and how to proceed with each claim. You'll advise the business on potential trademark licensing, technology licensing, or joint development agreements. In addition, you'll educate relevant business groups on intellectual property matters, including acquisition, claim avoidance and risk mitigation.

Requirements for the position include:

  • Posses a Juris doctorate degree

  • Minimum 8 years of experience within a law firm or corporate legal department, with primary emphasis on patent and intellectual property litigation

  • Extensive experience with litigation, including hands-on trial work

  • Seasoned communication skills- able to influence at a variety of levels and across functions in a complex matrix organization

  • Exposure to research methodologies and how they relate to manufacturing and product development

  • Knowledge of invention process, state-of-the-art technologies

  • Proficiencies with MS Office applications

  • Membership of Patent Bar strongly preferred
