INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SECTION - 2009

The Section had an active year. As part of the Section’s desire to reach out to its member a survey was completed to identify members’ interest in outreach CLE programs. The survey results are being used to direct programs which specifically address the interest of the members.

The Intellectual Property Section has continued to organize and sponsor several CLE’s in 2009, including the following:

  • Year End IP Review

  • Section Annual Meeting

The Section has continued its support of intellectual property law students and the law school as follows:

  • Participated at an IP event at University of Oregon Law School,

  • Participated at 4th Annual Legal Specialties Lunch at Lewis and Clark Law School

  • Participated at the Lewis and Clark IP event (wine event)

The Section continued to support the Intellectual Property Section newsletter for the Year 2009 and is in the process of working with Lewis and Clark in regards to a transition plan to an online format. The Section has taken an additional commitment to assist in providing mentors and reviewers to assist students in writing articles for the new electronic newsletter format.

The Section continued periodic happy hours (no-host) to enable social and business networking between members of the Section.

We also implemented a new monthly Brown Bag Seminar in the fall. Under the new program, each committee member is responsible for assisting in organizing one of the monthly Brown Bags. As of the end of December, three Brown Bags were held, including one directed to patent matters, one to copyright matters and one to trademark matters.

In addition, on the legislative front, the Section worked to review and provide comments for the Trademark Model State Bill. Although the Section did not proceed with sponsorship, comments and discussions were provided and Section members actively participated in the process.

Plans for 2010:

The Section is planning on continuing on developing the Brown Bag lunch series, including providing opportunities for local members to participate as speakers and as audience participants.

The Section is further planning to continue the Year End IP law overview and is actively putting together plans for the 2010 event.

The Section further is continuing to develop the Happy Hour events and other social networking events for intellectual property practitioners and students. These events continue to be successful and of value to the members of the Section.

The Section hopes to use the Survey results in its planning of events for 2010, using recommendations regarding timing and locations to reach out to many of its members who responded to the Survey.
